Your Family Vacation - How to Add Extra Hours (or Days) to Make It Long Enough

Ahhhh... Two weeks of vacation! Rest, relaxation, no work. Two weeks to enjoy yourself, to spend time with your family, to explore new places and to create some great memories.
But, wait, what about packing time, and travel time, and time to get ourselves ready to go back to our regular routine.
Suddenly two weeks doesn't seem like much time anymore.
Here are a few tips to help you stretch the time you do have and add a little extra padding to your family's vacation time.
Start your vacation planning at least six weeks in advance and you should have all of the last minute details well under control before your official vacation time actually begins.
For the two weeks before your trip, as you go through your normal routines, think about what you use on a daily or weekly basis that you will need to pack for your trip. Add these items to your master packing list.
Spend the last few evenings before your vacation begins to start your packing. You should be able to complete most of it in just a few hours-less with a well-planned packing list.
If possible, plan your vacation right before or right after a three day weekend. This will add an extra day to your schedule or if your children have an extended time off around the Christmas holidays plan your vacation at this time and you could gain and extra week or two. (Be sure to weigh the experience of spending Christmas away from home compared to extra vacation time if you choose this plan.)
Plan to return home at least two days prior to returning to work or school, or set aside the evenings of the week following your trip to catch up on things like laundry, mail, phone messages, email, etc.
Take your laundry to a Laundromat and complete all of it in just a few hours. This will give you more time to spend having fun.
If you do return home a couple of days early still continue to take it easy. Perhaps one parent can take the children to the park or a local attraction while the other one gets some uninterrupted time to catch up on all the loose ends.
Don't feel that you have to read every past newspaper and every email that is waiting for you when you return from your vacation. If something is that important you will hear about it! Overburdening your time when you return home will make the vacation less relaxing.
When you leave for a family vacation, determine to relax. No business calls. No paperwork. No pressure.
Just uninterrupted time to spend with your family resting, relaxing, and refreshing yourself.
